Amgen, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMGN) said Friday that marketing for its Prolia osteoporosis treatment was approved by the European Commission (EC). The EC’s approval of Prolia marks it as the first worldwide approval of the product so far, and the treatment has been approved for distribution to all 27 European Union member states, as well as Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. “The European approval of Prolia is a significant medical [advancement] for patients with bone loss conditions,” said Amgen’s senior vice president and international chief medical officer Will Dere. “In particular, we believe that Prolia will offer patients with postmenopausal osteoporosis at increased risk for fracture an important alternative to current treatments. Prolia reduces the risk of fracture through a convenient injection given every six months. Amgen is proud to make this new treatment available to physicians and their patients.” Along with benefitting postmenopausal osteoporosis patients, Prolia is also used to treat bone loss from hormone ablation in men with prostate cancer. Shares of Amgen are trading up 0.33% at .60 Friday morning.
