Grab your copy of “The Truth About Osteoporosis” – www.thetruthaboutosteoporosis.com Did you know that growth hormone can actually be a possible treatment for osteoporosis? One study headed by Miriam A. Bredella, a radiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital and assistant professor at the Harvard Medical School, said that “Growth hormone is extremely important for bone health, and women with increased belly fat have weaker bones and reduced growth hormone levels.” In the US alone, about one-third of adults are obese according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and this condition is associated with a lot of other medical complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases, joint mobility problems, asthma, sleep apnea, as well as high blood cholesterol levels. A previous study done by Dr. Bradella identified that women who had excess abdominal fat were actually at higher risk for bone loss, thus a subsequent study to test if administration of growth hormone can actually help in bone formation and serve as a new treatment for osteoporosis. A six-month, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted on 79 premenopausal women, who were abdominally obese with an average age of 36 and an average BMI of 35. Each of the women went through an MR spectroscopy exam to undergo evaluation on bone marrow fat. The bone mineral density (BMD) was measured using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Meanwhile, the thigh muscle area as …

What Is Osteoporosis? — Dr. William Batty, MD (AHJ MuscleNSkeletal)

What Is Osteoporosis? — Dr. William Batty, MD (AHJ MuscleNSkeletal) Osteoporosis is a disorder of decreased bone mass and structural changes within the bone. This ultimately leads to fragility of the bone, as well as increased risk of fracture. Both men and women are in risk of osteoporosis. Women have an increased risk of osteoporosis when they are post-menopausal. They may lose bone at a rate of 3-5% per year for up to 10 years. Peak bone mass is generally reached around the age of 25-30. Bone is very dynamic and constantly undergoing change. When the rate of bone breakdown is greater than the rate of bone formation, there is a loss of bone. A doctor will monitor bone loss over time and may recommend a follow-up DXA scan or other tests. There are several medications available to slow the progression of osteoporosis. Bisphosphonates. These drugs slow the natural process that breaks down bone. They can be taken as a pill once a day, or as a series of pills once a month. Certain types of bisphophonates can also be delivered intravenously once a year. Bisphosphonates can be used in both postmenopausal women and men, but they are not recommended for premenopausal women, or women who may become pregnant, since their effect on a developing fetus is not known. Hormone-replacement therapy. This type of therapy uses selective estrogen receptor modulators, or SERMs, which work like the hormone estrogen and are used to both prevent and treat osteoporosis. SERMs are prescribed for postmenopausal women whose estrogen levels have dropped. One example of a SERM is Raloxifene, which, in some women, may also lower the risk of breast cancer. Other hormonal approaches. In …

Superfoods for Super Bones
posted @ 10:36 am in [ WomenHealth ]
luminosolutions.com Superfoods for Super Bones Many people believe that the primary cause of osteoporosis is the lack of calcium in their diet. However, in the overall picture, calcium is only a small piece of the puzzle. Though calcium supplements can certainly help, there are other dietary concerns that need to be examined. Actually, the primary dietary cause of osteoporosis is the eating foods that are highly acidic in nature, such as refined white sugar, refined white flour, high-fructose corn syrup, soft drinks, cookies, candies, sweets, desserts, and anything containing sweeteners. The over-consumption of these products causes the pH level in your blood to become very acidic. In an attempt to counterbalance this, your body reaches out for any calcium and magnesium it can find, and releases those into your bloodstream in an attempt to keep the pH level at a healthy balance. Therefore, with every soft drink, candy, cake and goodie you indulge in, you are robbing your skeleton of its bone density. The calcium and magnesium the body harvests in an attempt to counteract this acidic environment gets passed through your kidneys, where it can also contribute to kidney stones and exits your body through your urine. To prevent losing your bone mass to dietary causes, simply avoid consuming any white flour, processed sugars, added sugars, soft drinks, sweets, candies, breads, or any other ingredients that are made with refined carbohydrates. In addition, certain superfoods …
